Patterns of Living and Ageing in Community Environments (PLACE): A Spatial-Behavioural Study of Older Persons in Singapore

Lead PI: Emi Kiyota
Co-I: Thang Leng Leng
Researchers: Chuan Ma, Naomi Chan

Duration: April 2025 to April 2027

This study investigates the role of informal, community-led gathering spaces in supporting ageing in place within Singapore's public housing neighbourhoods. While formal initiatives such as Community Care Apartments and Active Ageageing Centres have received significant policy attention, everyday informal gatherings at venues such as void decks, coffee shops, and shared outdoor spaces remain under-recognised despite their centrality to older persons' social lives, particularly among men less inclined towards the structured programmes currently offered.
Project Aims:

  1. To explores these overlooked, informal gathering spaces in Singapore’s public housing neighbourhoods.
  2. To understand where these spaces are, how they are used, and why they matter.
  3. To document and analyse the social and spatial practices of older adults in these settings.

We seek to answer key questions:

  • What makes these spaces successful or not?
  • How do they differ from formal spaces in design and use?
  • How do gender dynamics shape their usage?
