Dementia Data in Asia: Prevalence and Projections: In 2020, over 55 million people worldwide had dementia, and this number is projected to almost double every 20 years, reaching 78 million by 2030 and 139 million by 2050. Much of the increase is expected in developing countries, especially in Asia. (Alzheimer's Disease International, n.d.; World Health Organization, 2021). In the Asia Pacific region, the number of people with dementia is estimated to increase from 23 million in 2015 to 71 million by 2050 (Alzheimer's Disease International, 2014).
Dementia Data in Singapore: Current Statistics: Approximately 1 in 10 people aged 60 and above in Singapore have dementia. This equates to around 82,000 cases in 2018, and the number is expected to increase to 152,000 by 2030. The aging population is a significant factor contributing to this rise (Channel News Asia, 2023; Mind Science Centre, n.d.).
