COURSEWORK STRUCTURE

CDE Graduate Programmes are based on a modular system. Under this system, workloads are expressed in terms of Units, and academic performance is measured by grade points on a 5-point scale.

To help you plan and map out your academic journey, the NUS Bulletin serves to guide you as you explore options and pathways. This bulletin contains essential information on courses, your programme of study and its graduating requirements.

Information on the courses available for each semester and the class time-table is obtainable from the respective departments. In general, successful applicants will receive information on the class timetable and other details from the Department two weeks before the commencement of the semester. Students are to register for their courses online for each semester not later than the second week of commencement of each semester. For more details, do contact the respective departments after completing the registration formalities with us.

TRANSFER OF CREDITS WITH GRADES

Applicants who intends to transfer credits to their new Master's by Research (MEng, MA, MSc)/EngD/PhD by research programmes:

Upon matriculation, students may apply for transfer of credits and grades if they have completed relevant graduate course(s) from a previous graduate programme (Master degree programme) or undergraduate programme (BEng/BTech) in NUS. This may be counted towards partial or even complete fulfilment of the coursework requirement of the new Master's by Research/PhD/EngD programme. However, such requests are subject to case-by-case consideration.

Requested courses must be relevant to current research area and taken within 5 years from registration of the current programme of study. The courses that are approved for transfer of credit and grades will be calculated in the GPA of the student’s current degree. Please note that Departments may impose a minimum grade for transfer of courses.

Department and Faculty reserves the right to request students to take certain courses in fulfilment of the coursework requirement.

For graduates of the NUS (BEng or BTech) degree

NUS BEng or BTech degree holders may apply for a transfer of credits of a mix of either (i) course(s) counted towards their Bachelors or (ii) approved pre-taken course(s) not counted towards their BEng taken during their undergraduate candidature to their current graduate studies in NUS. These course(s) should be graduate courses which the student’s Department allows to be counted towards the graduate degree being pursued.

Click here for more information on pre-taken courses (e.g. on what to do before pre-taking courses). You may wish to consult the Department that you will be pursuing your new graduate research programme on their coursework requirements, before pre-taking course(s).

How do I make the request?

To be considered for transfer of credits (with grades or without grades), the candidate should firstly be matriculated (registered) for his research degree.  He/she can then apply by submitting the Application Form for Transfer of Credits to EngD/MEng/PhD/Master's by Research Programme, through their Thesis Advisor(s) and Department to the Office of Graduate Programmes within the first two instructional week of his/her candidature. The form should be accompanied with a copy of his/her academic transcript indicating the courses, which he/she would like to apply for transfer of credits.  All requests are considered on a case-by-case basis*.

*Please take note that some Departments impose a minimum grade for transfers of courses.
