Faculty Position in AI for Materials Discovery, Design, and Manufacturing
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications for faculty positions at the Assistant Professor (Tenure Track), Associate Professor, or Professor level.
We seek outstanding candidates with demonstrated excellence in research and a commitment to teaching, who will develop internationally recognized research programmes at the interface of artificial intelligence and materials science and engineering. Applications are particularly encouraged in the following areas:
- AI-driven materials discovery and materials informatics
- Autonomous laboratories and robotic experimentation
- Foundation models, agentic AI infrastructure, and multi-agent interactions
- AI-enabled manufacturing, digital twins, and process optimization
- Materials design from method development to large-scale calculations and multiscale simulations
- Data-driven design of energy, electronic, structural, quantum, and sustainable materials
Priority will be given to candidates working at the intersection of AI and automated laboratories and/or experimental characterization. Successful candidates are expected to establish a vigorous, externally funded research programme, publish in leading journals, supervise graduate students, and contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching in the Department.
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE)at NUS has more than 40 full-time faculty members (including one Nobel Laureate and multiple Clarivate Highly Cited researchers) and 160 research staff members. The University and our outstanding department have been consistently ranked among the top in the world. For example, in 2026, it ranked 2nd worldwide according to QS Ranking. These awards and recognitions have further allowed us to attract a wide range of research grants and funds from industry partners and the government.
The remuneration package is globally competitive, with a flexible wage system, composed of an annual base salary and a performance bonus component for good performers, and attractive work-life benefits such as childcare and exam leave. Aside from the remuneration package, faculty members are able to access world -class facilities in nano-characterizations (HR-TEM, nano-lithography, etc.)
Generous start-up packages are available for newly recruited faculty members to facilitate the establishment of their research programmes. Outstanding candidates are also encouraged to apply for the Presidential Young Professorship, or the National Research Foundation Fellowship.
With the start-up-friendly ecosystem in Singapore, MSE faculty can also access exciting prospects to commercialize innovations, with subsidies and a range of incubation and funding opportunities to help promote R&D, for example, the National Research Foundation’s Early-Stage Venture Fund, etc.
