Asst Prof Mike Shou honoured for AI-powered video innovation

Assistant Professor Mike Shou (Presidential Young Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering) has been honoured with two awards for his groundbreaking work in artificial intelligence and video understanding.

He was awarded the inaugural Provost’s Innovation Chair Professor Award for his project “AI-powered Video Intelligence and Automation”, and was also selected for the Innovation Venture Creation Award, recognising the innovation, translational potential, and real-world impact of his research in multimodal video AI.

Asst Prof Shou has developed seven open-source software programmes, each with more than 1,000 GitHub stars, reflecting their wide adoption by researchers and developers. His work includes Show-1 and Tune-A-Video, pioneering video generation models designed to make AI-powered video creation efficient and accessible to general users.

He also created ShowUI, a computer-use video agent that can operate a keyboard and mouse to perform tasks according to user instructions, enhancing productivity through automation. ShowUI received the Outstanding Paper Award at the NeurIPS 2024 Open-World Agents workshop, and has been downloaded over 240,000 times.

These achievements demonstrate Asst Prof Shou’s pioneering work in advancing the field of video AI and his commitment to developing technologies with significant practical value and societal impact.
