The NUS College of Design and Engineering (CDE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Seatrium Limited to establish a named professorship at the College.

The MOU was signed by Professor Teo Kie Leong, Acting Dean of CDE, and Mr Aziz Merchant, Executive Vice President, Technology & New Product Development, at Seatrium at a ceremony held at NUS on October 6.

The MOU establishes the Seatrium Professorship for a minimum of two years. Seatrium Professorships and Seatrium Visiting Professorships at CDE aim to attract top talent in energy transition and sustainability to Singapore to promote knowledge transfer and develop innovative technology and processes to boost competitiveness locally.

Dr Christopher Wiernicki, Chairman, President and CEO of American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), an international classification organisation, has accepted the appointment to be the first Seatrium Professor from the private sector.

Commenting on his appointment, Dr Wiernicki, emphasised the importance of adapting to industry changes, saying this would “require new ways of thinking as well as a radically altered skills profile”.

In addition to the Seatrium Professorship, a second MOU was also signed with NUS at the same ceremony to collaborate with the NUS School of Continuing and Lifelong Education (NUS SCALE) to bolster the technical and business competencies of Seatrium's employees.
