Professor Hu Jiangyong (Civil and Environmental Engineering) has been honoured as a Distinguished Fellow of the International Water Association (IWA). Her election to the prestigious fellowship was announced at the IWA World Water Congress and Exhibition held in Toronto, Canada on 12 August.
The Distinguished Fellowship recognises individuals for their long-term extraordinary contributions to the global water sector, as well as their leadership in advancing the IWA’s mission and objectives. The fellowship is among the highest honours awarded by the IWA, reflecting Prof Hu’s significant impact on water research and policy.
“I am deeply honoured by this recognition given by IWA," said Prof Hu. "I thank very much our team, environmental and water community in NUS and in Singapore, our collaborators in the world for the strong support and collective efforts towards environmental sustainability."
Sustainable water management
Headquartered in London with a regional office in Chennai, India, the IWA is an independent non-profit organisation that connects water professionals and companies to address the world's water challenges. The association serves as a platform for sharing expertise and promoting best practices in sustainable water management.
Prof Hu is the Director of the Research Cluster in Environmental Sustainability and the Center for Water Research at NUS, where she specialises in water treatment and reclamation, particularly in the area of emerging contaminant removal in water. She is also the Director of the Environmental Engineering programme and the Deputy Director of the NUS Environmental Research Institute (NERI).
With approximately 200 publications in international journals to date, Prof Hu is a prolific researcher. She has chaired and co-chaired numerous international conferences and holds several editorial roles, including positions as Editor, Associate Editor, and Editorial Board Member for various journals. She is a fellow of Institute of Engineers, Singapore and a Board Certified Environmental Engineering Member (by eminence), American Academy of Environmental Engineers & Scientists (AAEES), USA.
Prof Hu’s leadership extends to several professional organisations. She has served as Singapore’s representative to the IWA Governing Assembly and as a member of the IWA ASPIRE Council. Currently, she is the President of the Environmental Engineering Society of Singapore (EESS), Chair of the IWA specialist group on Assessment and Control of Hazardous Substances in Water (ACHSW), and a board member of the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA).
