Professor Lim Chwee Teck, Director of the Institute for Health Innovation and Technology (iHealthtech) at NUS and NUS Society Professor, has been elected an International Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, one of the highest honours in global engineering. He is the first and only Singaporean to receive this distinction, adding to his earlier election to the Royal Society in 2024.
The Fellowship recognises accomplished engineers, inventors and technologists who have made exceptional contributions to engineering. This year, 74 new Fellows were elected by their peers, including nine International and five Honorary Fellows.
Professor Lim was elected for his research in biomedical engineering and his contributions to the development of microfluidic and wearable technologies for disease diagnosis and therapy. A globally recognised biomedical engineer, inventor and entrepreneur, he has translated academic research into healthcare solutions through six start-ups, including one that was publicly listed. Among his technologies is a cancer-detecting biochip that captures circulating tumour cells from blood, offering a less invasive approach to cancer diagnostics.
Reflecting on the honour, Prof Lim said: “I am deeply humbled to be elected to the Royal Academy of Engineering. I would like to share this with my amazing mentors, collaborators, as well as past and present students and staff, with whom I have had the privilege of working to develop research with real-world impact. I am also deeply grateful to CDE for the trust and freedom to grow and contribute, and to my former and current Deans and Department Heads for their unwavering support over the years.”
His election reflects the growing global stature of Singapore’s science and engineering, and highlights how innovation is shaping the future of healthcare.
