Why NUS Cities?
The world is urbanising at an unprecedented rate with more than half of the current world’s population living in cities. By 2050, this is expected to rise to over 70%, with the majority coming from Asian countries.
The intersection of social, natural, and built environments within the city creates a platform for the multi-faceted growth of social and economic advancement, sustainability, and diversity. However, the consequences of rapid urbanisation necessitates the need to create sustainable, resilient, and liveable cities to address the issue that cities face.
The complexities of urban challenges and the emerging science of cities require interdisciplinary collaboration as well as a system-thinking approach to forecast, solve, and manage the multi-dimensional facets of the city.
NUS has the opportunity to play a key role in urban systems research and education with its strength lying in the breadth and depth of expertise. Equipped with a network of practitioners, academics, research centres, and agencies, NUS is well-positioned to undertake the pressing issues that our world calls for.
