Application of Complexity Science to study Urban Mobility in Singapore by Dr. Neil Huynh Hoai Nguyen (Scientist, Institute of High Performance Computing, A*STAR)
The precise delineation of spatial units' scales plays a crucial role in studying complex systems like cities, as it can significantly influence the accuracy and effectiveness of models depicting the dynamics of interaction between different areas within an urban system. In this talk, I will discuss how such notion of spatial scale could be applied to study the urban mobility pattern in Singapore, and how such pattern could be linked to other patterns including socio-economic distribution. In particular, I’ll present a study that investigates the spatial organisation of places in Singapore through the connectivity of the services provided by public transport, and links such pattern to other social patterns to gain insight into their characteristics in different areas across the country. I’ll also discuss the socio-economic polarisation and spatial inequality in terms of connectivity and accessibility and its potential implication for future (re-)development plans.

Rejuvenating Familiar Places in Singapore: A Systems Approach to Planning with Heritage and Identity Considerations by Ms Tan Peng Ting (Senior Planner (Conservation Planning), URA and Studio Leader for Liveable Cities, NUS Cities)
In small and highly urbanised city states like Singapore, land is a commodity and "brownfield" sites are often seen as opportunities for redevelopment and rejuvenation to achieve greater optimisation of land. However, these are familiar lived spaces with memories and significance to the community. They form part of people's identity, character for precincts, landmarks in the landscape, and physical spaces for intangible cultural heritage. How can these divergent needs be balanced through a systems approach through policy, planning and design? Peng Ting will share her experiences of Singapore's approach and challenges to urban heritage conservation and planning with heritage and identity considerations.

"What I learned about urban development from 20 years of private real estate practice" by Adjunct Assoc Prof Tay Kay Poh (School of Business, Studio Leader for Liveable Cities, NUS Cities)

I hope to share some "axioms" of successful urban development that I have learnt and observed over the course of my professional work. These axioms are neither path breaking nor complex, but serves to reinforce the strategy of doing a few simple things, but doing them well.  In many ways, they echo the Sustainable Cities framework that CLC & NUS Cities have consistently espoused.
