Displacement/Replacement in Singapore

by Prof. Tan Shin Bin (Assistant Professor, NUS Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy)

In recent years, the Singapore Housing Development Board (HDB) has been relocating residents of old rental flat blocks (e.g. Toa Payoh), as part of broader redevelopment plans for those estates. This sharing session will introduce an on-going, mixed-methods, multi-sited research study of the impact of such involuntary relocations of low-income rental flat residents. Through interviews and surveys pre and post relocation, this study seeks to understand how such moves affect the health and wellbeing of residents. This sharing session will describe the project, and share some preliminary observations gathered from the fieldwork thus far.

Planning a Cycling City - insights from Amsterdam

by Mr. Wisely Ong

Cities around the world are increasingly championing active mobility (walking & cycling) to be more sustainable and liveable. The benefits of cycling run the gamut and cycling is practiced in cities of different climate by different groups of people. However, in Singapore, the mode share of cycling remains abysmally low at around 2-3% despite efforts. This provided the impetus to study from exemplars, Amsterdam being one of them. Known as the Cycling Capital of the World, cycling is second nature over there. With 40% mode share, cycling is both a viable and popular way of getting around. Beyond that, it is a social activity, a movement, and an intrinsic part of the Dutch culture and identity. How did this happen and how can lessons learnt be applied here?
