Delivering multi-functional urban water system through integrated green and grey infrastructure at multiple scales
by Dr. Wang Jianbin (Chief Innovation Officer, Water Sensitive Cities Australia, Monash University)
This talk will present a strategic vision for shaping future cities by developing multi-functional urban water infrastructure that delivers a broad spectrum of benefits beyond traditional urban water services. Grounded in extensive implementation evidence, the strategy translates research into actionable practices. The presentation will explore several key principles of practice, supported by proof-of-concepts, including:
- Embedding green infrastructure into the cityscape at various scales to provide diverse ecosystem services
- Leveraging urban design, landscape architecture, and industrial design as integrative platforms for implementing multi-functional water infrastructure
- Advancing the ‘smart city’ agenda by integrating green and grey infrastructure through emerging technologies, such as IoT
Dr. Jianbin Wang serves as the Chief Innovation Officer at Water Sensitive Cities Australia, based at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Working closely with researchers and practitioners from a diverse range of disciplines and sectors, Jianbin is dedicated to translating cutting-edge research into practical solutions, offering transformative responses to emerging urban challenges. His expertise lies in promoting multifunctional infrastructure, incorporating nature-based solution and permaculture into urban design, and applying circular economy principles across different spatial scales.
Jianbin fosters innovation from the early stages of ideation through to design, development, and prototyping. He collaborates with partners to bring these ideas to life through on-ground proof-of-concept implementations. Over the course of his career, he has worked extensively with governments, industries, and research institutions, leading over 30 on-ground demonstration projects across Australia, China, Singapore, and Israel.
His innovative strategies, demonstration projects, and contributions to urban water transformation in the City of Kunshan have garnered numerous accolades, including recognition as part of China’s National Sponge Cities demonstration projects by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development in 2016, the Excellence in Innovation Award from Cooperative Research Australia in 2017, the designation of Kunshan as a National Demonstration City in 2021, and the International Award of Excellence from the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) in 2022.
Jianbin has an academic background in environmental science and engineering, holding a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering, a Master of Environmental Science, and a PhD in Science.
