MOE Engineering & Tech Programme Scholarship (ETPS) Workshop

Energy & Sustainability

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to advance, the demand for electricity to power data centres and digital infrastructure is growing rapidly. To ensure a sustainable future, there is an increasing need to harness clean and renewable energy sources that can meet future energy demands while reducing environmental impact.

Students are challenged to design and develop a renewable energy system capable of converting natural energy into usable electrical power, while maximising energy efficiency and supporting the operation of a sustainable AI ecosystem.

Challenge:

The objective of this track is to help students understand how wave and tidal energy can be harnessed to generate clean electricity. Through lectures, demonstrations and hands-on activities, students will explore marine-energy conversion, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), low-carbon concrete and 3D-printing technologies for sustainable marine infrastructure.

Deliverables:

  1. Design and build a working wave or tidal energy harvester.
  2. Develop a sustainable support structure for the marine-energy device.
  3. Test and optimise the prototype to improve its stability and energy output.
  4. Contribute to a 10-minute integrated group presentation and 2-minute video.

Instructors

Dr Gary Lei
Dr Jiarui “Gary” Lei is an Assistant Professor at NUS whose research focuses on environmental fluid mechanics, wave–vegetation interactions and nature-based solutions for coastal protection. He earned his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from MIT. His work explores wave attenuation by aquatic vegetation, hybrid coastal-protection systems and machine-learning methods for predicting underwater flows, contributing to more resilient and sustainable coastal communities.

Dr Gary Lei
Assistant Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Dr Du Hongjian
A/Prof Du is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at NUS and Director of the Centre for Construction 3D Printing Research. His research focuses on 3D concrete printing, digital construction and low-carbon materials for a more sustainable built environment. An award-winning educator, he champions experiential and industry-relevant learning. He is also the co-founder of CIRCRETE, a deep-tech start-up developing solutions to decarbonise cement and concrete production.

A/Prof Du Hongjian
Associate Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Dr Chew Lup Wai
Dr Chew is an Assistant Professor in the Department of the Built Environment at the National University of Singapore. His research focuses on airflow in built environments, natural ventilation in buildings, and urban heat mitigation. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a First Class Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from NUS. Before joining NUS, he conducted postdoctoral research at Stanford University. His teaching covers fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and research methods.
