MOE Engineering & Tech Programme Scholarship (ETPS) Workshop

Robotics & Autonomous Systems

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, transportation and smart cities. However, AI systems depend heavily on physical infrastructure that must be continuously monitored, maintained and optimised to operate safely and efficiently.

Traditional inspection methods are often labour-intensive, time-consuming and potentially hazardous. As AI-powered infrastructure continues to expand, there is an increasing need for autonomous robotic systems capable of performing routine inspections, collecting environmental data and supporting predictive maintenance.

Students are challenged to design and develop an intelligent autonomous robot capable of navigating a simulated environment, detecting obstacles and collecting information to support the operation of a sustainable AI ecosystem.

Challenge:

The objective of this track is to introduce scholars to how AI, computer vision and embedded systems come together to create intelligent autonomous robots. Through hands-on activities, scholars will design, programme and test robotic systems capable of sensing their surroundings, navigating independently and performing inspection and monitoring tasks within a simulated environment.

Deliverables:

  1. Develop and programme an autonomous robot capable of navigating a designated environment.
  2. Integrate sensors and AI vision to perform inspection and monitoring tasks.
  3. Demonstrate the robot’s autonomous navigation and mission execution.
  4. Contribute to a 10-minute integrated group presentation and 2-minute video.
