CDE Summer Engineering Research Internship for US Students (SERIUS)

This summer, CDE once again played host to undergraduate students from our exchange partner universities for the SERIUS programme. Through this 8-week research internship programme which concluded on 17 July 2024, CDE’s engineering departments offered a diverse array of projects, providing the students with valuable research opportunities in our laboratories. The programme hosted 39 participants from 10 partner universities, with Cornell University being the latest addition to the list of partners.
SMS Koh visits STDCT as part of Go Green SG 2024

As part of Go Green SG 2024, our very own Sustainable Tropical Data Centre Testbed (STDCT) organised an exclusive tour of its data centre on 28 June 2024. Led and coordinated by the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, Go Green SG is a nationwide sustainability movement aimed at encouraging the adoption of a more sustainable lifestyle through everyday choices and actions.
As the world’s first data centre testbed in the tropics, STDCT aims to generate sustainable and efficient data solutions in hot and humid climates. It also works with different stakeholders in academia and the data centre industry to conduct research and develop innovative cooling solutions to achieve a digital green economy.
Prof Heng Chye Kiang (Deputy Dean, CDE), Prof Lee Heow Pueh (Acting Head, ME) and Assoc Prof Lee Poh Seng (Programme Director, STDCT) were joined by Dr Koh Poh Koon, Senior Minister of State for Manpower, and Sustainability and the Environment and members of the public who had signed up for the tour. Together, they explored the cooling technologies and systems around STDCT and how these can help reduce data centre power consumption in the tropics.
Dr Koh thanked NUS for arranging the tour and the participants for supporting Go Green SG through their active participation. He added, “I am heartened by the encouraging response from the members of the public. Several activities, like today’s session, were fully subscribed soon after online registration began in early June.” He also touched on the role of STDCT as one of the many initiatives that can “help achieve a more environmentally sustainable and climate-resilient Singapore.”
