As NUS celebrates its 120th anniversary, our alumni gathered in Shanghai and Beijing for the NUS Innovation Forum (NIF).

Jointly organised by the NUS Office of Alumni Relations and the NUS Alumni Associations, the events were a reunion of our partners, faculty, and alumni from around the world, who came together to reaffirm their shared commitment to sustainable development and innovation for a greener future.

The Shanghai event was attended by NUS President, Professor Tan Eng Chye, Mr Edi Fung, Vice-President (Development), and Professor Koh Lian Pin, Associate Vice-President (Sustainable and Resilient Development), attended the event. They were joined by our Dean, Professor Teo Kie Leong, Deputy Dean, Professor Heng Chye Kiang, and Vice Dean (Alumni Relations), Associate Professor Arthur Tay.

The theme for the Shanghai NIF was "Innovating Sustainability—Building a Greener Future," which was very much in alignment with our focus on sustainability in CDE. Professor Heng, who teaches and researches urban history, sustainable urban design and planning, shared his thoughts on "Designing for Tomorrow: Sustainability Across Scales in the Face of Climate Change".

In his opening speech, His Excellency Mr Chua Teng Hoe, Singapore Consul-General in Shanghai, highlighted the remarkable progress and achievements that NUS has made in academic research and talent development over the past 120 years. He hoped that NUS would continue paving the way for the next 120 years.

Mr Chua also emphasised the importance of sustainable development and that the forum would encourage more conversations among the attendees. Throughout the forum, alumni engaged in discussions on sustainable development and innovation, underscoring their ongoing commitment to addressing global challenges.

The events concluded with the NUS Alumni Dinners, where Professor Tan expressed his heartfelt thanks to the alumni for their support and contributions over the years. Professor Tan was joined by Mr Chua and other university leaders, along with members of the NUS Alumni Associations, for cake-cutting ceremonies to commemorate NUS's 120th anniversary and the 70th anniversary of CDE (Engineering).

Apart from affirming the University's commitment to sustainable development and innovation, these events were also a reminder of the collective achievements of NUS and its community over the past 120 years and its commitment to continue nurturing its legacy of academic excellence and innovation.

Canice Ng (Class of 2024) wins prestigious award for hybrid trolley-walker

did-project

Congratulations to Canice Ng (Class of 2024) for winning the 2024 Japan Institute of Design Promotion Special Award at the Taiwan International Student Design Competition!

Canice's winning project, Aly, is an innovative hybrid trolley-walker that combines the functionalities of a walking aid and a trolley. Inspired by the observation that some individuals use trolleys as mobility aids, Aly was specifically designed with the elderly in mind yet appeals to all age groups. The project aims to normalize the use of mobility aids across different demographics, fostering equality and reducing the stigma associated with ageing. This empowering design encourages the adoption of supportive mobility solutions for the elderly.

Aly was Canice's graduation project in 2024, under the supervision of Associate Professor Christophe Gaubert.
