The NUS Centre of Excellence in Modelling and Simulation for Next Generation Ports (C4NGP) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). The partnership aims to promote knowledge-sharing and research into geospatial applications that can improve safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability in Singapore’s port and maritime sector.
Hosted at CDE, C4NGP is a leading research centre that aims to support Singapore’s maritime and port industries to develop innovative capabilities and enhance their global competitiveness.
Signed on 26 March, the three-year MOU aims to advance the application of geospatial technology within the maritime industry. The collaboration also involves a range of other industry and academic partners including Jurong Port, Singapore Cruise Centre, Esri Singapore, Hexagon’s Safety, Infrastructure and Geospatial Division, Nika, the Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine Singapore (TCOMS), and A*STAR Institute of High Performance Computing (ASTAR IHPC).
Geospatial technology uses data from satellites, sensors, weather patterns, and real-time monitoring systems to create 2D and 3D visualisations. These tools can help maritime stakeholders better monitor operations, optimise planning, and manage risks, improving overall operational safety and efficiency. For example, the partnership will focus on enhancing port operations such as vessel navigation, marine services, and bunkering of alternative fuels, as well as strengthening preparedness for environmental challenges, including sea level rise
The collaboration also aims to drive innovative solutions for monitoring port traffic, improving vessel routing, and enabling predictive maintenance, thus reducing congestion and operational costs. By leveraging these technologies, MPA and its partners hope to support Singapore’s ambition to remain at the forefront of global port innovation, while addressing environmental and sustainability goals.
The MOU was signed at the inaugural International Maritime Geospatial Forum (IMGF) during Singapore Maritime Week 2025, bringing together maritime industry leaders and geospatial experts.
With the signing of this MOU, MPA and C4NGP aim to foster deeper collaboration between academia, industry, and government to explore and develop cutting-edge solutions for the maritime industry, positioning Singapore as a leader in maritime innovation and digital transformation.
