Lo-Hi Tech: Primitive Futures
“Lo-Hi Tech explores the intersection of high and low technologies, leveraging the strengths of both to create innovative hybrid design solutions that are efficient, sustainable, and responsive to urgent environmental challenges. This approach emphasizes the layering of different trajectories—investigating how primitive materials and techne can be enhanced with modern technology, while honouring cultural nuances and local capabilities. In a world facing rapid change, architects and designers must also plan for a ‘primitive future,’ where the built environment is shaped by adaptability, resilience, and a thoughtful response to resource limitations”
This talk will delve into the design processes and fabrication journeys of Studio SKLIM, showcasing their work across material research, industrial design, and architecture at multiple scales. Kevin Lim will discuss how the studio balances digital and analogue design methods, offering insights into their diverse projects spanning Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and India.
Kevin Lim, founding principal of Studio SKLIM, leads an award-winning multidisciplinary design firm based in Singapore. He holds an AA Diploma from the Architectural Association in London, a Bachelor’s in Architecture from the National University of Singapore, and is an accredited professional of the India Green Building Council (IGBC). His international career, shaped by early mentorship from William Lim, a pioneering figure in Singaporean architecture, spans London, Singapore, and Beijing, and includes collaborations with the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA).
His research, supported by grants from DesignSingapore and Hyundai Motor Group’s ZER01NE, focuses on natural material and ‘primitive’ building technologies, exploring their potential to shape modern sustainable strategies.
Restlessness in Architecture
RESTLESSNESS describes the energetic and haphazard anxieties of an architect who could not sit still. Having practiced, written about and taught design for two decades, this talk traces a journey which includes advocacy through architectural institutions, open-mic talks and other loosely defined affiliations; demonstrating the back-and-forth bouncing between the sometimes (un)productive personal inclinations and the (trans)productive, all-encompassing nature of the architecture discipline.
Post-rationalising segues (oft unintentional) and serendipitous relations between Genome Architects’ built work, writings, events and learnings, this talk rambles through personal episodes within practice and education, sharing what it is like and what it means to build, teach, write and advocate for architecture in Singapore.
Ar. Yen Yen Wu is principal at Genome Architects, a practice with a portfolio of diverse select private, commercial and public sector projects, premised on people-centric experiences conveyed cognitively and sensorially in the wonderment of possible environments. The practice has received awards from the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA). Yen Yen graduated from NUS, then Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP) with a Master of Architecture, receiving an Award for Excellence in Design upon graduation.
Outside of practice, Yen Yen served in the SIA Council from 2018-2023 and has taught at NUS Department of Architecture since 2009 where she is currently Adjunct Assistant Professor.
