Constructive Conservation –
Reimaging Iconic Monument: Jurong Town Hall
This exhibition presents a series of design models produced within the Design for Adaptive Reuse (AC5009) studio of the Master of Arts in Architectural Conservation (MAArC) programme at the National University of Singapore. Led by Dr Nikhil Joshi and Ar Sri Saravanan, the studio explore alternative futures for Jurong Town Hall (1974), a National Monument and a significant symbol of Singapore’s post-independence modernist and industrial development.
Through processes of site analysis, heritage assessment, and environmental evaluation, students translated research into spatial propositions that negotiate between retention, adaptation, and transformation. Presented at multiple scales, the models articulate design strategies addressing collective memory, material resilience, climate responsiveness, and contemporary programme insertion. Together, they demonstrate how physical modelling functions not only as a representational tool but also as a method of inquiry, testing how modern heritage can be reactivated through environmentally responsible and culturally grounded design.
