Designed for playful interaction, these transparent spheres invite viewers, especially children, to hug and touch them, creating a direct, tactile connection with the artwork. The installation reframes horticultural waste as a precious and abundant resource, revealing its potential for unexpected beauty. Each sphere contains withering leaf litter and discarded flora foraged from the grounds of NUS, showcasing the full arc of a plant’s afterlife through the gradual transition from vibrant green to earthy brown. This represents an ephemeral process of renewal, where waste is momentarily refurbished as an exquisite art piece before being recycled into compost to nourish new life. Grounded in the practices of foraging and recycling, the work is a celebration of the overlooked natural cycles of decay and rebirth.

wasteXscape is a venture led by a team that includes students and alumni from the NUS Bachelor of Landscape Architecture programme — Cleon (BLA class 25’), Chloe, Kaifeng, and Natalie (BLA year 3)—with Associate Professor Hwang Yun Hye. It aims to operate at the intersection of sustainable ethics and contemporary flora designs, using horticultural waste as a core material. This process is a tangible commitment to a circular economy, sourcing locally to minimise carbon footprint and highlighting the beauty in overlooked resources. As the materials are entirely reclaimed and locally sourced, each piece possesses its own unique story and character, seeking a more regenerative and thoughtful approach.

This artwork installation was a collaborative effort. Special thanks to the NUS University Campus Infrastructure team for access to landscape materials, the NUS Department of Architecture for providing storage and assembly space, and Mao Sheng Quanji Construction Pte Ltd for their manpower and logistics support.
