Learning from Practice: Context, Change and the Future of Urban Design and Planning
Urban design and planning are grounded in established principles, yet the conditions shaping cities are increasingly complex and rapidly changing. Contemporary urban knowledge now spans mobility, ecology, climate, infrastructure, economics, governance, technology and social life, offering greater expertise but also greater fragmentation. In practice, the challenge lies not in the absence of knowledge, but in integrating diverse forms of knowledge, negotiating competing priorities and making decisions for the city as a whole.
Drawing on more than two decades of practice across China, Singapore, India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, this seminar examines how established planning ideas are tested and transformed across contexts. It proposes adaptive judgment as a vital capacity for urban practitioners: integrating knowledge, questioning assumptions, evaluating consequences and adapting responses.
The seminar also considers its implications for urban education, particularly how students can be equipped to make informed, responsible decisions amid uncertain urban futures.
Dr Ning Huo is an urban designer and master planner with over two decades of experience linking research with urban development practice. A former lecturer at the National University of Singapore, she spent 17 years at Aedas as an executive director and senior partner, leading award-winning projects across China, Singapore, the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia.
Her work spans new urban districts, regeneration, transit-oriented development, innovation districts and mixed-use developments. Dr Huo is committed to bridging practice and education, exploring how urban designers can translate competing priorities into coherent spatial decisions and help cities adapt to changing conditions.
