Community, Street, Museum
Community, Street, Museum is a proposal for a brief requesting a community museum and art gallery located within the context of the Golden Mile- Beach Road HDB precinct. Site studies and analysis revealed an invisible separation between its east and west halves, created by occupancy (rental vs. permanent) and socioeconomic background. The site for the museum hence was positioned at a central circulation cluster, a chokepoint where pedestrians moving from one side of the side to the other generally converge; in addition, it is a convenient social spot for the community.
The museum scheme consists of small programmatic volumes scattered around an interwoven net of circulation routes, creating small, intimate streetscapes and public ‘plazas.’ In developing the museum around the circulation routes, priority was given to maintaining the main function of the site as a circulation mode, while enhancing the visual and comfort qualities of the space.
