Streets of Changsin Dong
The proposed design is an infills project aimed to reactivate the streets of Changsin-Dong in Seoul, South Korea, to provide care for the residents there. As the country and city moves towards an ageing population, the design aims to ease the burden of care from the government and caretakers by providing facilities and infrastructure that would allow the population to easily attain the care they need on their own. This would encourage the elderly to be independent and self-sustainable, reducing the incoming problems of a silver tsunami that Seoul will inevitably face.
In definition, care is characterised through the provision of both healthcare, and programmes and spaces that encourages engagement with the social lives of people. In a two-pronged approach, the project focuses on providing accessibility and engagement to revitalise the current site in Changsin-Dong. Accessibility includes floor material, street widths, visual properties of recognition, and softening the boundaries and edges of the existing site through landscaping and activities. On the other hand, engagement is tackled through providing attractive spaces, providing visual connection to spaces and inter-programmatic relationships through spatial design.
