International Building Design Competition 2020

The iBuildSG Tripartite Committee (TC) was set up in Feb. 2019 by Building and Construction Authority (BCA) in Singapore to foster tripartite collaboration and efforts among IHLs, TACs, Professional Boards and BCA, across the disciplines in the Built and Environment (BE) sector, such as Architecture, Civil Engineering, Facility Management, etc. Following the initiative, The International Building Design Competition 2020 was organized by Singapore Building & Construction Authority in partnership with SP, NUS, NTU, SUTD.
The theme for this year’s competition is “Sustainable & Intelligent City”, stressing on the importance of designing sustainable and smart buildings in urban Singapore. The competition was to design a mixed-use development integrating residential, commercial, retail, commercial, community and transportation usages under one roof, and required participants to demonstrate their knowledge in sustainable building design, Design for Manufacturing and Assembly, as well as Integrated Digital Delivery.
Among the 53 registered team (39 submissions), NUS students from various departments and faculties participated in this year’s competition and won 11 of the 15 prizes, including the top prizes, merit awards, consolation awards.(https://www.buildingcareers.gov.sg/Events/Featured-Events-aspx/IBDC20)
In particular, 5 out of 9 top prizes, including the Innovation Award are from multidisciplinary collaboration initiative led by Department of Architecture (SDE) and Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (FOE) to tackle the design issues posed in the competition. Working with faculty members from both departments, during the COVID-19 Circuit Breaker period, the students proposed design solutions that were not only imaginative, but buildable as well. The collaboration showcased how our students were able to bridge the gap between design and engineering, to propose winning solutions in the built environment.
