Dharavi is a place with a colourful urban fabric that has been woven together over generations. Once a purely immigrant settlement, residents have built their families and lives in Dharavi. The urban fabric that has been crafted by the people, with its maze-like networks and layered streetscape characterises the existing Dharavi. Consequently , we believe the emulation of the existing street pattern would preserve the genius loci of Dharavi, and secure a strong memory of the past.
Our studio aims to improve the liveability of Dharavi by redesigning utilites as amenities and improving the comfort levels of living quarters. A key feature of present Dharavi is the usage of communal spaces by residents, to meet chat, play and interact, despite these spaces being limited or constricted. Our studio believe in promoting these communal areas while ensuring a better quality of life.
