Project Alt is a research centre which aims to provide daycare services for children in return for data collection towards the research on children’s development. The daycare centre introduces a series of contrasting spaces for education and play (virtual/physical) which revolves around the children’s developmental needs. Education and play are classified into three zones: learning, playscape and virtual play. Moreover, for childcare’s structural organisation, each level of the daycare is designed specifically for targeted age groups.
The design challenges the rigid convention of daycare through the integration of digitalisation. It also encourages the children to make full use of technology to keep up with digitalisation. Children are able to manipulate the spaces virtually through apps by allowing control with mechanisms such as revolving walls, moving planters and etc. As the future is driven by technology, our physical and social interaction should not be compromised. Thus the architecture serves as a platform to stimulate these habits within the boundaries of play.
