Trail 10+: Beyond Movement: Reconstructing Flow, Pause and Interaction

Trail 10+: Beyond Movement reimagines Trail 10 in Malaysia’s Cameron Highlands as an adaptive landscape that balances ecological restoration, cultural heritage, and visitor experience. Once part of an interconnected network of Orang Asli movement routes linking Gunung Jasar to surrounding cloud forests, the trail system has become fragmented through colonial surveying, plantation expansion, and contemporary development, disrupting both ecological continuity and human movement.

The project combines topographic, ecological, and hydrological analyses to identify key environmental pressures along the trail, including soil erosion, landslide susceptibility, canopy loss, and the degradation of sensitive mossy forest habitats. These findings inform a landscape strategy that redistributes both human and water movement to reduce pressure on vulnerable areas while enhancing ecological resilience. Site-specific interventions include contour-aligned nurse logs that stabilise slopes and trap sediment, elevated bamboo and hardwood boardwalks that protect fragile moss communities, and layered rattan canopy structures that provide shade, encourage vegetation regeneration, and enhance moisture retention through passive fog capture.

Recognising the dynamic nature of the cloud forest, the proposal introduces a seasonally adaptive trail network, allowing ecologically sensitive sections to recover during the monsoon while maintaining access through alternative routes. Complementing these physical interventions, digital technologies—including augmented reality, drones, and digital twins—create an additional layer of environmental interpretation, enabling visitors to engage with Orang Asli ecological knowledge and non-extractive foraging practices through immersive, multisensory experiences.

By integrating ecological restoration, Indigenous knowledge, and adaptive infrastructure, Trail 10+: Beyond Movement transforms the trail from a recreational corridor into a resilient landscape that supports conservation, learning, and long-term coexistence between people and the cloud forest ecosystem.
