Taking centre stage in the newly revamped NUS Central Library, the 31m long BookBridge housing the NUS Libraries’ historical rare book collection has just received international acclaim, winning the iF DESIGN AWARD 2022 ! Recognised as one of the most prestigious global design prizes since its inception in 1954, the iF DESIGN AWARD is conferred annually by iF International Forum Design GmbH, the world’s oldest independent design organisation based in Hannover, Germany. In the face of intense competition – close to 11,000 entries from 57 countries – the BookBridge emerged as one of the winners in the Interior Architecture category.

The jury panel was impressed with the innovative design philosophy by the SkyTimber Lab (https://www.skytimber.org) led by A/P Shinya Okuda from the Department of Architecture, which designed and developed the BookBridge in collaboration with NUS Central Library. The BookBridge’s pleasant, serene aesthetic – akin to a lush, cool forest – is combined with a sustainable functionality, as it is one of the first structural applications of SkyTimber Lab’s proprietary tropical Mass Engineered Timber (MET), a renewable, sustainable building material for architecture.
