AI + CLIMATE RESILIENT CITIES

Yu Qian Ang is an Assistant Professor (Presidential Young Professor) in the Department of the Built Environment at the National University of Singapore. His diverse career spans academia, government, and entrepreneurship. He holds a PhD in Architecture (Building Technology) from MIT and an MPhil from the University of Cambridge, where he was a Gates Scholar. His research focuses on physics-based simulation methods and AI/machine learning for sustainable cities. Currently, he leads the City Syntax Lab, working on energy efficiency, thermal comfort, equity, and urban sustainability, with his tools already being used in cities to reduce carbon emissions. Yuqian’s work has been published in journals including Nature Communications, Sustainable Cities and Society, and Applied Energy. Prior to his academic career, he served as Senior Assistant Director at Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, contributing to the development of Singapore’s $19 billion national research masterplan. He has also consulted for the World Bank on urban data science workstreams. As an innovator, Yuqian has co-founded two startups and is spinning off a third.
