Bridging Biodiversity, Design, and Restoration Technology

Camphora, represented by Boo Chih Min, will share their experience in mangrove restoration across various parts of Singapore, including Pulau Ubin and Pulau Tekong. The session will offer insights into how factors such as location, size, surrounding environment, water quality, degree of coastal shelter, anticipated human use, and the intended ecosystem services—such as coastal protection, sea-level rise mitigation, and habitat conservation—influence the way different mangrove parks are strategized, perceived, and designed.

Mangrove restoration is a core strength of Camphora. The firm integrates ecological baseline studies, hydrological assessments, and site-specific planting strategies to rehabilitate coastal margins. It has participated in restoration projects in areas such as Pulau Tekong and Pulau Ubin, reintroducing native mangrove species and developing nature-based solutions to mitigate erosion and sea-level rise. They also partner with agencies like NParks and URA to embed ecological resilience into large-scale urban and infrastructure planning.

Camphora, established in 2007, operates at the intersection of biodiversity science, ecological design, and landscape architecture. Its habitat enhancement and restoration work merges conservation with functional landscape planning across diverse ecosystems from freshwaters to degraded shorelines. The firm’s coastal restoration services encompass nursery propagation of mangrove propagules, shoreline protection, and restoration strategies grounded in coastal engineering and hydrological studies.

At the heart of Camphora’s botanical expertise is Boo Chih Min, a master horticulturalist and plant specialist. She brings deep botanical knowledge and practical experience to projects focused on native plant restoration and habitat classification. A co-author of the widely referenced 1001 Garden Plants in Singapore, Boo also consults on development projects and is a regular guest lecturer on Singapore’s flora.

This lecture is a part of the MLA Y2 Option Studio LA5701 “Holding Ground: Mangroves of Bali” led by Evi Syariffudin.
