The Thinking Skin: Designing Density through Performance

Abstract
This presentation explores how high-performance building skins and vertical typologies operate as active agents in shaping dense urban environments. Drawing on two decades of international practice, academic research, and studio teaching, it examines how façades can mediate between climate, governance, and inhabitant experience. From award-winning façade projects to student-led competition work, the talk positions the envelope not as passive wrapper but as a thinking system—where performance, morphology, and urban agency converge to produce responsive, sustainable, and culturally embedded vertical urbanism.

Dr. Vuk Radović is an architect, academic, and researcher working at the intersection of environmental performance, construction innovation, and urban design. With a PhD from Keio University, Tokyo, and two decades of international experience across Australia, Japan, China, and Europe, his work explores high-density housing, façade technology, and sustainable urbanism. He was Course Director of the Master of Architecture at Curtin University and teaches across PhD, Master’s, and undergraduate programs. His research focuses on vertical urbanism and high-performance building skins, integrating design, policy, and pedagogy to shape climate-responsive and socially engaged urban futures.
