Operating Fields

In the field, from the field, under the field, forming the field: fieldwork is at the heart of landscape architecture. Fieldwork is more than descriptive; it is prescriptive—an underrepresented agent in design processes. This talk proposes four operations for reconsidering how fieldwork can produce knowledge, inform design, and shape the field.

Gareth Doherty is a landscape architect, educator, and researcher, and an Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore. Doherty’s work explores the intersection of environmental sustainability, social equity and design. He adopts a human-centered approach to landscape architecture, integrating ethnographic fieldwork and participatory design methods to understand and shape relationships between people and their environments.
