Belinda Review
Ar. Belinda was invited as a guest reviewer for a Year 1 studio final crit

Ar. Belinda Huang, the award‑winning architect behind landmark projects such as Pinnacle@Duxton, is co‑founder of ARC Studio Architecture + Urbanism with her husband, Architect Khoo Peng Beng, who currently serves as Head of Pillar (Architecture and Sustainable Design) at SUTD. For years, the duo have mentored generations of students in the Department, many of whom are now accomplished architects and urban planners.

Adding a new dimension to her practice, Ar. Belinda, who earned a Master of Counselling some time ago, has served over the past academic year as the Department’s Student Wellbeing Advisor. Known for her cheerful yet, at times, serious demeanour and her attentive ear, she has become a trusted confidante for students seeking support. In this piece, she shares her personal journey, which will certainly resonate with and inspire the NUS community and the field of architecture.

What inspired you to pursue and practice counselling, despite your busy schedule as an established architect? “I’ve always loved talking to people and I think they’ve enjoyed talking to me too. Offering a listening ear and advice where needed has been deeply fulfilling. Pursuing a Master in Counselling felt like a natural next step, made possible by a supportive partner in work and in life, my husband, Khoo Peng Beng, who is also the cofounder of our practice.”

Was there a pivotal moment that led to this decision?  “I see it less as a shift and more as part of a holistic life journey that augments what I already do. A spiritual retreat in early 2017 was a heart and mindopening experience that strengthened my commitment to service. A few months later, I felt a strong prompting to apply for the Master’s.”

How do you balance this passion with a demanding career?  “It’s essential to stay aware of your own psychological state. To be effective, a counsellor must practice self‑care. I only offer time when I’m certain I can be fully present for the person I’m counselling.”

In what ways has your architectural training influenced your approach to counselling? “That’s an interesting question. The ability to suspend judgment and consider issues from multiple angles is one. Creative, onthefly thinking also helps when supporting clients who feel stuck.”

Can you share a moment from your counselling practice that affirmed this path? “The privilege of being trusted with someone’s most vulnerable moments is profoundly humbling. Hearing that our time together has helped—even a little—is a bonus, not an expectation.”

What advice would you give students unsure about pursuing architecture or struggling in Design Studio? “Architecture is challenging especially for those in Singapore after 10 years of national education because it requires a shift in mindset. Give it a chance. It can be immensely rewarding to create something with the potential to touch lives, whether built or unbuilt. And if you need a safe space to talk about it, I’m here to offer that environment.”

We couldn’t let her go just yet, so we asked a few candid questions to get to know her better.

Can you share three interesting and lesser-known facts about yourself? “I love dogs! I love to cuddle and hug them so much that my husband wonders why I’m not the same with him (laughs).”

If your leadership style could be represented by a song, which song would you choose and why? “Lead With Love by Melanie DeMore. I believe everyone deserves to flourish, and only an environment of love and support can make that possible.”

“Don’t give up hope
You’re not alone
Don’t you give up
Keep movin’ on”

What is your preferred way to relax and unwind after a long day at work? “The best way is to share your day with someone you love, the ups and the downs. To be received and affirmed, and to do the same for the other person.”

We couldn’t resist sharing this YouTube video featuring Ar. Belinda and Ar. Khoo, who were named Designers of the Year in the Architecture category at the 2020 President*s Design Award.

DOA students may send her a direct message here to arrange an appointment. You’ll have a confidential space to share openly and work through challenges. She is available in the Department discussion room every Wednesday and Friday from 1 pm to 5 pm.
