MLA Options Studio Field Report: LA4702/LAD4010 | MLA Studio City/ Design 8: Post Mega Games: Urban Surgical Planning of Former Tokyo Olympic Harumi Island
From 22–26 February 2026, Landscape Architecture students led by tutor Yifeng Lin conducted a fieldwork in Tokyo, Japan, focusing on the waterfront districts of Harumi Islands and Tsukishima. The trip was part of the BLA4/MLA1 option studio entitled Post Mega Games – Urban Surgical Planning of Former Tokyo Olympic Harumi Island.

The studio investigates the transformation of Tokyo’s waterfront following the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. During the field trip, students conducted waterfront site investigations, documenting spatial conditions, pedestrian circulation, public spaces, and the relationship between large-scale urban development and surrounding residential neighbourhoods.

Through on-site observation, sketching, mapping, and photographic documentation, students analysed the urban structure and landscape character of the waterfront districts. The fieldwork also included case studies across Tokyo, allowing students to compare different approaches to neighbourhood development and public space design.

The field investigation will inform subsequent design proposals exploring future landscape and urban strategies for post-event waterfront districts.

The students will present their final projects on 22 April 2026 at NUS.
