In Memoriam: Dr Liu Thai Ker (1938–2026)
Widely hailed as the “Father of Urban Planning in Singapore,” Dr Liu Thai Ker was also a visionary champion of architectural education and an inspiring role model for generations of young architects. His steadfast commitment to education is evident in his long-standing involvement in architectural education at NUS.
A pioneering figure in Singapore’s housing and urban development, he served on the School’s Advisory Committee from 1981 to 2000, guiding programme reforms and advancing the School’s aspiration for international recognition. He played a pivotal role in shaping the architectural curriculum in Singapore, and also served as an Adjunct Professor at both the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and the School of Design and Environment.
We are deeply saddened by his passing, and he will be greatly missed. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Dr Liu’s family during this difficult time.
