Architecture OPEN HOUSE 2025

The Bachelor of Arts in Architecture degree, or B.A. (Arch), champions design excellence through studio research and exploration. Critical issues on climate, the atmosphere, construction, materials, resources, urbanization, density and justice are all addressed in the undergraduate programme through the cutting-edge medium of making in the design studio.
Here are some examples of our undergraduate students’ projects:
Design 6: Booklet 1 features final projects from the Year 3 undergraduate cohort of 2022/23
Design 6: Booklet 2 features final projects from the Year 3 undergraduate cohort of 2022/23.
Design 6: Booklet 3 features final projects from the Year 3 undergraduate cohort of 2022/23.

The Master of Architecture degree, or M.Arch, recognizes architecture as a cultural practice that involves both speculative intelligence and practical execution. Our Design Options Studios and graduate level Design Thesis encourage students to acquire knowledge and cultivate critical perspectives.
Here are a catalogue of graduate design thesis projects from last year’s cohort.

Beyond Coursework
Not only do some of our students’ work tackle social issues, but their outputs have also generated social impact outside the school. Here are some examples:
Sundays In-Between’ (2023)
‘Sundays In-Between’ (2023), a short film that complemented Ye Thu’s Master of Architecture thesis with the same name, was selected for screening at Asian Film Archive’s Singapore Shorts 2023 film festival at the Oldham Theatre. The film reimagines Peninsula Plaza’s liminal spaces on the Burmese community’s off-days. Singapore Shorts is an annual showcase organised by the Asian Film Archive (AFA) to celebrate the boldness and diversity of local short films each year.

Void Deck 3.0 – HDB Lively Places Challenge 2020
Law Kai Xiang and Chew Keng Onn were awarded the Merit Prize for The Lively Places Challenge 2020, an initiative by Singapore’s Housing Development Board (HDB) that aims to empower community-driven placemaking projects to enlivening Singapore’s public spaces. Team Void Deck 3.0 also emerged as one of the 6 finalists under the ‘building fund category’: projects under this category are required to realize a physical transformation of existing public spaces, with an implementation period of more than 6 months. Their proposal ‘Food Grab’, a game that utilized motion sensing technology (enabling residents and visitors to interact with on-screen projections while a depth camera tracked their movements), was installed in Tampines Ville, with the intention of promoting healthy living as well as fostering intergenerational community bonding.
Prize-winning Students’ Work
The work of NUS architecture students regularly win awards at national, regional and international competitions. Here are some of the recent awardees:
Archatographic Map of the Incomplete Landscape on Pedra Branca (2023), by Eugene Tan Wei Jie.
Eugene Tan Wei Jie from the Master of Architecture (MArch) class of 2023 achieved international recognition for his design thesis under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Lilian Chee. The thesis reflected on the nature of disputed islands, in particular the island of Pedra Branca and how their political significance meant they were more important as strategic sites or territory. His drawing ‘Archatographic Map of the Incomplete Landscape on Pedra Branca,’ developed as part of his thesis, went on to win the The Architecture Drawing Prize at the 2023 World Architecture Festival (Digital Category Winner).
Incomplete Landscapes: An Architecture of Co-production
Meanwhile, his animated film ‘Incomplete Landscapes: An Architecture of Co-production,’ received numerous accolades: the Excellence Award in the Moving Images Category (General) at the 2023 Asia Digital Art Award Fukuoka, Merit Award (2nd Ranking) in the Graduate Category at the 2023 World Landscape Architecture (WLA) Student Awards, and Special Mention in the Long-Form Video Category, Student Creator of the Year, and the Computer-Aided Drawing Category at the 2023 Architizer Vision Awards. Spanning a period from 1965 to 2100, the film presents a speculative scenario where coproduction is imagined as a guiding philosophy in the development of the site.

Soh Jie Hui Adrian was a Year 3 architecture student in 2022/2023 when he won the 11th Asian Contest of Architectural Rookie’s Award (ACARA). This international competition for architectural students in Asia is organised by the Asia United Architectural Association (AUA). Adrian’s project ‘Intertwine @ Duxton Plain Park’ reinterprets the market and hawker centre in Singapore’s Tanjong Pagar area. The project focuses on seamless integration with the green corridor, and new means of commercial exchange, food delivery, community interaction and active living.

In early 2023, current Master of Architecture (M.Arch) student Ryan Quah won the Gold Award for the Architecture Category in the 2022 Nippon Paint Asia Young Designer Awards with his project ‘Urban Tarzan’. The competition’s theme, Converge: Pushing the Reset Button, prompted participants to envision how design solutions could aid individuals in adapting to life post the COVID-19 pandemic, encouraging them to explore innovative ways of coping with the new challenges.
