DEP5110 Urban Design and Planning
Urban Design and Planning is the second studio course of the MUP programme and represents a continuation of the first studio course in Semester 1. In Semester 2, the studio focuses on two different scales of urban planning: the level of urban design at a local scale (precinct and neighbourhood) and the level of urban planning at a larger township scale. The primary focus is on masterplan development and the creation of an urban design plan, whereby the students will apply planning principles and software knowledge gained in the first semester. The key aim is to translate urban analysis findings into more refined planning briefs, masterplans, urban design plans, development control plans, and implementation strategies. This will be done through careful consideration of accessibility, connectivity, mobility systems, green and blue spaces, social and communal functions, place identities, heritage, sustainability, and nature-based solutions to inform shaping inclusive, resilient, and vibrant urban environments. Students will also explore implementation approaches through planning tools, policy recommendations, and governance mechanisms to ensure feasibility.
