CEE 70th Anniversary Logo Launch: A Milestone Celebration
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) marked a momentous occasion with the launch of its 70th Anniversary Logo on Monday. The event, attended by over 150 participants, brought together staff, students, distinguished alumni, and esteemed guests. Among them are Professor Teo Kie Leong, Dean of the College of Design and Engineering as the Guest of Honor, Provost Chair Professor Liew Mun Leong, members of the Industry Advisory Board, and the Presidents of the Professional Engineering Board and the Institution of Engineers Singapore.
The event commenced with an inspiring opening speech by Professor Richard Liew, Head of Department, who reflected on CEE’s rich legacy and the achievements of its distinguished alumni. Among those highlighted was Professor Liew Mun Leong, a pioneer from the first graduating batch of 1970 from the University of Singapore. His contributions to the development of the Singapore Changi Airport are an inspiration for all engineers.
A significant highlight of the event was the unveiling of the 70th Anniversary Logo by Professor Teo and Professor Liew. The logo, designed by Ms Trang Tran, NUS CEE, Class of 2017 was selected as the winning design from over 40 submissions in the CEE 70th Anniversary Logo Competition held last year. In recognition of their creative efforts, the top 10 contestants each received a consolation prize.
The 70th Anniversary Logo was also encapsulated in a 3D-printed concrete model that was painstaking made by research students of Dr Du Hongjian and Dr Chew Soon Hoe. Crafted from cement that incorporates recycled clay, glass and plastic, this innovation will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the built environment.
The Department took the opportunity to express its gratitude to the early donors of the College of Design and Engineering Bursary. These generous donors were presented with Certificates of Appreciation for their invaluable support in helping students achieve their academic aspirations.
The event concluded with an engaging presentation by Dr Chew, who provided an overview of the exciting lineup of celebrations planned for the 70th Anniversary. In a fitting finale, Dr Chew led a traditional lohei ceremony, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune for the year ahead. This vibrant Lunar New Year tradition brought together staff, students, and distinguished guests in a joyful celebration, reinforcing the spirit of unity and success within the engineering community.
The CEE 70th Anniversary Logo Launch not only marked the beginning of a year-long celebration but also served as a testament to the Department’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and community. With more exciting events ahead, the CEE community looks forward to commemorating seven decades of engineering leadership and impact.
