Centre of Ocean Renewable Energy and Ecosystems

The research centre was launched on 22 September 2004 by the Economic Development Board (EDB) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) as the Centre for Offshore Research and Engineering (CORE).

In 2026, the centre was relaunched as the Centre for Ocean Renewable Energy and Ecosystems (CORE2), reflecting its expanded focus on ocean renewable energy and the development of innovative, sustainable solutions for the ocean environment.

Building on its foundations in offshore engineering, CORE2 advances research and innovation in ocean renewable energy, including floating wind, wave, and tidal energy systems.  CORE2 also explores innovative solutions of floating infrastructure and ecosystems, including floating terminal, aquaculture, breakwaters, bridges, data centres and cities.

Through multidisciplinary research and collaboration with industry and research partners, CORE2 aims to develop technologies and engineering solutions that enable the sustainable use of ocean resources, enhance marine infrastructure resilience, and support the growth of the blue economy.
