Biography
Dr Wawan Solihin has spent 30+ years of his professional career focusing on research and development on Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Spatial Data. He focuses on the data: how to manage huge buildings and their surrounding data efficiently, interoperability, and applying automation to perform intelligent interrogation of the building data, for its design intent, and its code compliance.
He started research and development for automated code checking in Singapore with CORENET ePlanCheck initiative by the government of Singapore in early 2000. He spent several years managing BIM software development team in Autodesk and participated in the IFC interoperability feature in Autodesk Revit.
He pursued PhD degree with the father of BIM, the late Prof. Chuck Eastman, in Georgia Institute of Technology, with the mission to solve the challenges of the automated BIM compliance check. He completed his PhD in a record time of 2.5 years.
He continued to do research and development for the BIM automated code checking and successfully led the development of various relevant projects for PUB’s BIM Checking System, URA’s BIM Autochecker for computation of GFA, CORENET-X Model Checker Pilot, JTC’s BIM checker. He led the development of Fornaxcloud which handles complex BIM automated checking in the cloud.
He actively contributes to training next-generation BIM savvy professionals as an adjunct lecturer with NUS (National University of Singapore) Civil Engineering faculty on the subjects of BIM data interoperability, OpenBIM data modelling, and advance use of BIM such as automated code compliance checks. He co-supervises PhD as well as Final Year students on the use of AI for the advanced use with BIM data.
He is also actively involved in the various standardization efforts as a member of the Singapore Technical Committee for Architectural Works, as a Steering Committee member of the Regulatory Domain with buildingSMART International (bSI) organization, and as an Assistant Technical Coordinator with buildingSMART Singapore chapter.
