Securing your Industrial Attachment Placement

Industrial Attachment placements can be secured via

1. Application through the NUS TalentConnect (TC) portal.
2. Self-Initiated Application. For self-initiated applications, please email your job description (JD) to the IA administrator for approval.

Note: A briefing will be held for students at the start of each Student Application Window.

Official Industrial Attachment Period

Each industrial attachment programme has a designated official period. Once you have secured your industrial attachment, the deliverable deadlines will be emailed to you.

Students may begin their industrial attachments earlier or extend them beyond the official period. However, the official period must fall within the approved timeframe set by the school to meet course requirements. All industrial attachments must be completed before the start of the next academic semester.

Mentorship

During your industrial attachment, your employer will typically assign a work supervisor to provide guidance and oversee your day-to-day tasks. NUS will also assign a mentor to support you throughout the industrial attachment. Both the NUS mentor and your work supervisor will evaluate your performance via an online feedback form.

Students will be jointly evaluated by their work supervisor and NUS mentor based on factors such as professionalism and conduct, verbal and written communication skills, ability to understand the work context, and application of technical knowledge.

Industrial attachment courses are assessed on a Completed Satisfactorily (CS) / Completed Unsatisfactorily (CU) basis.

Reading Courses During Industrial Attachment

Students may take up to 12 units of coursework during their industrial attachment period. Students have to obtain permission from the employer for the course enrolments, and to ensure that they do not interfere with the full-time industrial attachment commitments.

Job Application via TalentConnect

You may post your job opportunities on TalentConnect during each posting period. We will notify you via email at the start of each industrial attachment cycle. Once you receive student applications through the platform, please contact the applicants directly to arrange interviews.

TalentConnect Recruitment Procedures

1. Register your company via Sign-up if you have not obtained the complimentary account for the NUS TalentConnect (TC) portal.
2. Login to NUS TalentConnect at https://nus-csm.symplicity.com/employers/index.php
3. Click on the 'Create Job Posting' in the right column.
4. Under 'Position Type', select 'Internships - College of Design and Engineering (Engineering)'. followed by selecting “Yes” to enter the selection of internship programmes.
   • Under ‘Restrict Applications/Activate, select ‘Yes’.
5. Select the appropriate 'Work Term'.
6. Under Experiential Learning Placement Type, select accordingly. Please select one type only.
   • Master of Science: Civil and Environmental Engineering Industrial Attachment (CE5003/ESE5005)
7. Enter the “Internship / Project Title” and other required information.
   • Please note that selecting relevant Engineering Disciplines determines which departments are required to review and approve the posting. Posting will be published to students of the selected Engineering Disciplines if approved and deemed suitable.
8. Select your preferred way of receiving student applications/resumes
   • Please remember to select ‘Accumulate Online’ to ensure that the system captures a record of the student applications.
9. Upon approval by the required departments, all approved postings will have a one-month posting duration. The system will remind you via email nearing to the expiry of your postings, and you can choose to extend them for another month if they are still available for student application.

 
Tracking Student Applications

The industrial attachment recruitment process is no different from hiring for your graduate positions. Upon receiving students’ applications, please proceed to contact and interview them. You may choose to update the student application status after the interview to better track the recruitment process.

1. Login to NUS TalentConnect at https://nus-csm.symplicity.com/employers/index.php
2. Click on the “View Job Postings” in the right column.
3. Click on the specific job/internship posting that you are recruiting for.
4. Click on “Student Resumes” to view the student applicants for the specific posting.
5. Update the student application status on the drop-down list located on the right side to better track the recruitment process.
   1. Not selected – Student is not selected for this position.
   2. Reviewed – You have reviewed this student's application.
   3. Shortlisted – You have reviewed this student's application and would like to shortlist him/her for an interview.
   4. Accepted – You would like to extend an offer to the student.   

Industrial Attachment Allowance & CPF Exemption

The monthly allowance for MSc students is a minimum of SGD1,400.

Central Provident Fund (CPF) contributions are exempted for NUS matriculated students employed for training approved by NUS during the school term and/or school holiday periods. Refer to the CPF board website for more information.

Evening Classes & Exam Leave

Students may wish to take evening courses while on their industrial attachment. The courses are typically conducted on campus from 6pm onwards.

When required, students will submit an application form endorsed by both the employer and the department. The application form will include course details such as lecture day and time, as well as the exam date.

Employers are to assess and/or discuss with the students the possible impact on full-time work commitments. If approved, students may request to leave work earlier for classes and time off for mandatory examinations. Students will have to submit the relevant supporting documents, such as the examination timetable, to their Employer.

Work Pass Exemption for Foreign Students

Students embarking on an internship under the College’s Industrial Attachment programmes do not require a work pass.

Assessment & Grading

An online feedback form will be emailed to you at the end of the industrial attachment period.

Insurance

All full-time matriculated students of NUS subscribe to a compulsory Insurance Scheme as part of the students’ miscellaneous fees.

Employers are recommended to cover the students under their organisation’s insurance schemes, such as medical or workmen’s compensation (WICA), especially if they are required to work in high-risk environments (i.e. laboratories, shipyards, heavy industry environments with machinery/equipment).

Employment Contract

As of 1 April 2016, all Employers are required to issue key employment terms (KETs) in writing to employees covered by the Employment Act, including interns under a contract of service. This will help ensure an aligned understanding of the terms and conditions of the internship.

Internship Support Letters

Internship Support Letters will only be issued for credit-bearing internships and after the employment contract is signed. If you require the Internship Support Letter urgently, please email Ms Eileen Ong at onghl@nus.edu.sg.

Work Hours

Students will follow the official working hours of the Employer. Under the Employment Act,

• An employee should not be required to work for more than 8 hours a day or more than 44 hours a week. However, he/she may be required to work overtime if he consents to do so, subject to the limit of 12 hours per day and a maximum of 72 hours per month.
• The Employer must pay the employee for the extra hours of work or for working on his/her rest days or public holidays. An employer must grant the employee one rest day (which is not paid) in a week, which may be on a Sunday or any other day.

Leave

Leave may be granted at the Employer’s discretion. Students and Employers are to refer to the internship contract and abide by the contractual terms and the employer's HR practices. The College recommends the following.

Annual Leave:  Up to 3 days (for Industrial Attachment) | Up to 1 day (for Vacation Industrial Attachment)

Sick & Hospitalisation Leave: As per the Employer’s HR practice.

• The student must inform or try to inform the Employer within 48 hours of his/her absence.
• The student’s sick leave must be certified by the company’s doctor or a government doctor (including doctors and dentists from approved public medical institutions).
• Employers and students are to notify the Careers & Internships team if students’ sick leave application exceeds what is entitled or if students require extended sick leave.

Compassionate Leave: Typically provided if there is a passing of an immediate family member and is to be granted at the Employer’s discretion.

Special Leave: The College encourages Employers to allow students to participate in official competitions and events representing Singapore or NUS.

• Students may use their annual leave for such situations, or Employers may request that students make up for the time away if the annual leave is insufficient.
