Biography

Professor CHOW Yean Khow is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He has been a faculty member in the department since 1982. Prior to joining NUS, he practised as an offshore geotechnical engineer with Fugro Limited (UK), mainly involved in the design of offshore foundations in the North Sea. His past appointments at NUS include: Deputy Head (Administration) (1998 – 2000), Department of Civil Engineering; Vice-Dean (Graduate Studies) (2000 – 2003), Vice-Dean (Academic Affairs & Graduate Studies) (2003 – 2008), Faculty of Engineering; Chairman, Faculty of Engineering Promotion & Tenure Committee (July 2012 – June 2014); Executive Director, Centre for Offshore Research & Engineering (CORE) (July 2008 – March 2022); Executive Director, Maritime Institute @ NUS (Nov 2011 – Mar 2019); Director and co-Programme Leader, Keppel-NUS Corporate Laboratory (Feb 2014 – Dec 2020); Management Board Member, Centre for Maritime Studies (May 2020 – May 2022).

Professor Chow’s main research interests are in offshore foundation systems, computational geomechanics, pile foundations and soil-structure interaction. He has published extensively, with over 200 technical publications. He is a Registered Professional Engineer (Civil) and Specialist Professional Engineer (Geotechnical) in Singapore. He has served as geotechnical consultant to numerous projects in Singapore and the region.
