Chew Soon Hoe

Assistant Professor

Deputy Head (External Relations and Development)

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Qualifications

  • PhD, University of California-Berkeley, USA

Teaching Areas

  • Very active in conducting short course and seminar to practicing engineers under PAC (NUS), and IESA on practice orientated courses on geotechnical engineering, geotechnical software, erosion and sediment control, and design of ABC water features.

Research Interests

  • Soil improvement of soft ground (Jet grouting, deep cement mixing and stone column etc),
  • Geosynthetics (including reinforcement and filtration, geotubes, erosion control using bio-engineering etc),
  • Geotechnical seismic study,
  • Numerical modelling of geotechnical problems.

Industrial Experience

  • Actively involved in research and consultancy relating to various applications of geosynthetics in Singapore and this region. Over the years, he was the Principal Investigator for the Singapore Government funded industrial research on Jet Grouting for ground improvement and tunnelling works, and was the consultant for many grouting related projects in Singapore and Malaysia for basement excavation and tunnelling. In addition, he was involved in consultancy work related to extension works of Port in Pasir Panjang, Singapore as well as PTP Port in JB, Malaysia.
  • Dr Chew is also an expert in erosion control including coastal slope protection, and currently heavily involved in research on the characterisation of the seabed sediments, in particular in Tekong area and Johor River mouth.

Consulting

  • Actively consulted in general area of geotechnical engineering including land reclamation, slope stability, seepage analysis, pile foundation, soil improvement and excavation related problem. He is also an expert in using numerical modelling (e.g. using PLASIX, Slope/w, Seep/w and Sigma/w, SAFE etc) for design and analysis of geotechnical problems, including tunnelling works. He has conducted many training classes on the use of PLASIX and GeoSlope family programmes (including Slope/w, Seep/w and sigma/w) to the public as well as Housing Development Board, Singapore (HDB), Surbana International Pte Ltd.
