We are thrilled to share the success of our NUS Chemical Engineering 50th Anniversary Dinner, a memorable evening filled with warmth, reflection, and inspiration.

Prof Saif A. Khan, Head of Department, NUS ChBE, opened the event with a heartwarming and inspirational speech, highlighting our department’s growth and development throughout the years, commemorating the generations of chemical engineers we have taught, and their contributions to various key industries in Singapore and beyond.

It was an honour to welcome our VIP speaker and distinguished alumnus, Mr Lee Yi Shyan (Class of 1986). During 2006-2015, Mr Lee served as Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Trade & Industry, Ministry of National Development and Ministry of Manpower.

Mr Lee’s keynote speech took us on a nostalgic journey back to the 1980s, from programming with Fortran punch cards that took a full day to run, to the birth of the IBM PC, which shaped the lives of students. His message resonated deeply: the only way to deal with technology is to be constantly updated, with learning being continual and lifelong.

As we celebrate our chemical and biomolecular engineering graduates’ contributions to Singapore’s economy, we are inspired by Mr Lee’s closing words: “Be bold, dream and create the future.”

Beyond celebrating the achievements of the department, this was a joyful reunion of former classmates, mentors and former department staff, reunited by one commonality: being part of the ChBE family.
