Programme Objective
This 6-day programme is designed to provide foundational training in safety, health and environmental (SHE) practices, and aims to instill fundamental masteries in SHE Sciences and Practices.
Programme Outline
The programme will cover topics to achieve foundational SHE-competency in:
- SHE Legislations, SHE-Management System, Industry Safe Practices;
- Essential SHE-Sciences in Safety System Reliability, Toxicology, Environmental Protection;
- Safety Management in General and Chemical Process Industries;
- Chemical Hazards Management and Chemical Process Safety;
- SHE-Risk Management, Hazard Identification and Risk Analysis (HIRA) Tools & Techniques, and Safety & Health Impact Assessment;
- Fundamentals of Hierarchy of Hazard Controls and Safe Work Practices
Who Should Attend
- Prospective candidates who do not have a relevant bachelor’s degree in engineering, technology or natural sciences, but with relevant SHE work experience and considering a mid-career switch
- Prospective candidates who wish to apply for admission into the NUS Master of Science in Safety, Health and Environmental Technology (MSc SHE) programme.

Instructors
Associate Professor, Dr. SIN Siang-Meng, Ivan Associate Professor Ivan Sin is an academic staff in the National University of Singapore, Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering. As a certified emergency responder, planner, fire and explosion investigator, and commander, Ivan come with 25 years of experience in the areas of safety and health, with focus in fire safety, emergency response, incident investigation, business continuity, disaster recovery, and crisis management with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).As a member of Technical Committee for Petroleum Processes and Products, SPRING Singapore and Council Member of the Society of Loss Prevention for Process Industries (SLP), Ivan is experienced and well-received in project consulting and training for clienteles in emergency incident, business continuity and crisis management; including conducts of validation tabletop and deployment exercises at different corporate levels, such as Pertamina PHE Head Office, Shell Jurong Island, Roche Pharmaceuticals, Iron Mountain Information (Former Recall Corporation), and TPSC Asia (Former Total Petrochemicals). |

Assistant Professor, Dr. LOH Tzu Yang Assistant professor Loh Tzu Yang is currently the co-director for the Master of Science in Safety Health and Environmental Technology with the Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, National University of Singapore.Dr. Loh has more than a decade of experience in regional safety leadership functions for different companies in the private sector. He obtained his Master of Science in Safety Health and Environmental Technology from the National University of Singapore and his Doctor of Philosophy in Maritime Engineering at the University of Tasmania (Australia) under the Antarctic Gateway Partnership Scholarship Programme.His current research interest lies in the area of risk analysis, with a focus on fuzzy system dynamics. Dr. Loh is also a certified industrial hygienist (CIH) under the board for global EHS credentialing (USA) as well as a registered workplace safety and health officer under the Ministry of Manpower. |

Lecturer, Dr NAGARAJAN, Karthiga Dr Karthiga Nagarajan obtained her Bachelor of Chemical Engineering from Anna University, India. She pursued her doctoral research on biodegradation of monoaromatics at National University of Singapore. She is an Educator at the Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, NUS. The courses she teaches include Chemical Engineering Principles and Practice, Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, Reaction Engineering, Chemical Process Safety and Industrial Toxicology. |
Award of Certificate
Programme participants will be awarded with a Certificate of Participation or Certificate of Competence, depending on their performance in the overall end-programme assessment.
Certificate of Competence will only be issued to those who passed the overall assessment with a minimum score of 70%.
Participants who are pre-selected for the MSc SHE Programme and had successfully achieved the Certificate of Competence will be offered direct admission to the Master of Science in Safety, Health and Environmental Technology programme.

Admission to Master of Science (Safety, Health and Environmental Technology) Programme
Participants with a Good Bachelor’s degree, related SHE work experiences and had demonstrated competence and ability to meet the rigor of the MSc SHE programme with the award of Certificate of Competence may be considered for admission to the MSc SHE programme.
Note that this Certificate of Competence is not a stackable qualification for the MSc SHE programme. The validity period of the MSc SHE admission application is not more than 5 years from the award of the Certificate of Competence.
