We were pleased to host Prof David Bogle, President of IChemE, at NUS on 21 Sep 2022 during his trip to Singapore. The meeting was hosted by Dr Cindy Lee, Dr Suraj Vasudevan, and Dr Sweekun Yap, from NUS. We were joined by members of the local IChemE committee as well as colleagues from NUS Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering.
We discussed and shared on several issues, including the future of chemical engineering, the current landscape of chemical engineering in Singapore, as well as chemical engineering education. One of the highlights is how to engage students and other stakeholders in important conversations on ethics and sustainability in the industry, which is a theme that resonated across the room. We also discussed on how computational skills complementing chemical engineering practice can be implemented and taught in the undergraduate curriculum.
One of the highlights of the visit was the demonstration of the Virtual Reality setup by Dr. Sweekun Yap to Prof David and the other delegates. Our VR tool is used to train and educate our students in operation and safety of common chemical engineering units, including distillation column and pump. The use of virtual tools and other technology-enhanced learning methodologies were also discussed during our session.
