"Capturing Greenhouse Gas Removal" Image Competition
18th June 2024
Associate Professor Kua Harn Wei and his team, comprising of Abhimanyu Goel and Huang Lei, won the top jury award of the "Capturing Greenhouse Gas Removal" Image Competition, organized by Oxford University's Smith School of Enterprise & the Environment, and the UK CO2RE programme. The UK CO2RE conducts research on Greenhouse Gas Removal (GGR) and it is co-ordinating Hub of the GGR-Demonstration Programme, which is the largest GGR programme funded by the UK government to date.
They submitted an image entitled ‘Biochar: Halo and Bubble of Life’ as seen in the Instagram post, which is a new material the team is developing, comprising biochar, which is made from recycled wood and limestone calcined clay cement (LC3). This material allows the capture of CO2 in seawater and freshwater, creating a “CO2 halo” around itself.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed between CDE and the Army Safety Inspectorate (ASI), expanding the partnership between the two institutions into the area of research and technology.
A/Prof Goh Yang Miang from the Department of Built Environment (DBE) and his team are contributing to their partnership by working with ASI to develop safety leading indicators.
Through NUS’ expertise in workplace safety and health (WSH) and machine learning, as well as ASI’s domain knowledge in the Army’s training and operations, this project aims to identify leading indicators from the data of past military training-related incidents to develop a predictive model that can accurately predict injury risk before they actually occur.

SMRT Mandai Rail Depot and Singapore Rail Discovery Centre Visit
20th September 2023
One of our 2023 highlights is our learning journey visit to the Singapore Rail Discovery Centre and SMRT Mandai Rail Depot.
Thank you, Cedric (SMRT outreach team) and all the SMRT staff, for hosting us.
It was a great learning experience for our BEng Infrastructure and Project Management (IPM) undergraduate students to see the inner workings of our rail infrastructure. Our students particularly enjoyed the close-up look at the rolling stock used on the Thomson Line in the state-of-the-art Mandai Rail Depot.
