Frequently Asked Questions

For prospective BEng Infrastructure and Project Management (IPM) Students

The BEng IPM programme is the only engineering programme in the College of Design and Engineering (CDE) which focuses on imparting management skills and knowledge in the built environment domain, and the cultivation of legal and contract administration skills.

This unique combination is not available in the syllabi of the other engineering programmes. If you are keen to learn about managing people, projects, and processes in the built environment, the BEng IPM programme is the programme for you.

The BEng IPM programme is the programme that balances management skills with the rigorous science of engineering. The flexible and highly customisable BEng IPM programme offers you a choice of 35+ second majors and 50+ minors and specialisations to provide a truly individual educational experience whether you are aiming for depth or breadth in your quest for knowledge and employability.

Consultations with the Taskforce on the College of Design and Engineering (CDE Taskforce) consisting of leaders and employers in the built environment and engineering industries showed that employers value the creation of an educational offering which adopts an interdisciplinary approach by combining the rigour of engineering with strategic management, building science and legal principles.

It is envisioned that a people-centric manager who is capable of harnessing engineering principles will be even more effective in addressing tomorrow’s challenges today regardless of the industry.

The built environment is defined by the Singapore Government as consisting of industries as diverse as construction, real estate, security and environment services.

A BEng IPM graduate – depending on his/her customisation of his/her IPM degree by taking second majors, minors or specialisations – may be employed as a project manager/engineer, infrastructure and facilities manager/engineer, data analyst, energy manager/engineer, cost and contracts manager/engineer, Building Information Modelling (BIM) manager/engineer, material scientist etc. in the built environment.

The IPM programme is an engineering degree. It is an evolution of the existing BSc PFM programme by incorporating NUS engineering domain knowledge in the syllabus to reflect the built environment industry’s need for infrastructure, facilities and project managers to be equipped with both technical engineering knowledge as well as strategic management know-how.

The BEng IPM programme is manifestly suitable for those who aspire to become leaders in the built environment sector capable of managing complex projects with strong foundations in infrastructure and facilities management blended with legal and engineering principles.
