Professor Massimo Alioto's Green IC group, from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, received theĀ Takuo Sugano Award for Outstanding Far-East Paper at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC 2023).Ā  It is the first time a Singaporean institution has received a best paper award from the ISSCC.

The group was honoured for the paper "Side-Channel Attack Counteraction via Machine Learning-Targeted Power Compensation for Post-Silicon HW Security Patching".Ā The group has made a breakthrough in hardware security technology with sponsorship for their national-level "SOCure" project from the National Research Foundation and Cyber Security Agency of Singapore.

The ISSCC is a leading indicator of research and development in advanced solid-state circuits worldwide. It is widelyĀ known as the "Olympics" in integrated circuit design innovation in academia and the semiconductor industry. The ISSCC Takuo Sugano Award was established to recognise outstanding achievements in semiconductor technology development.

Associate Professor Jerald Yoo's group from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering received the IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) 2023 Demo Award. The paper title is "BatDrone: A 9.83M-focal-points/s 7.76Āµs-Latency Ultrasound Imaging System with On-Chip Per-Voxel RX Beamfocusing for 7m-Range Drone Applications." The paper makes known a ground-breaking discovery of adopting ultrasound for all-weather high-frame rate (>24 frames-per-second) 3D depth sensing and imaging targeted for drone navigation.Ā Ā The ISSCC2023 Demo Award is awarded to the two top papers that were presented at ISSCC2022 as well as in Demo Session. Assoc Prof Yoo's group also won the same award in ISSCC2021 2022.

Assistant Professor Clement Zheng's Crafting Interactive Circuits on Glazed Tableware project was featured in Dezeen, a top and influential architecture, interiors, and design magazine, on 15 March 2023. The project is a collection of conductive ceramics that can heat food, act as interfaces for smart devices and sense moisture. "We were inspired by the Internet of Things and wanted to investigate how 'smart' objects can be embedded into everyday life," Zheng told Dezeen. "ā€¦ rather than develop a separate range of electronic devices for the home, we imagined how common ceramic ware might be transformed into objects that can be interacted with."

The project was developed with a team of researchers and students from the Division of Industrial Design: Associate Professor Hans Tan, Associate Professor Yen Ching-Chiuan, Han Bo, Liu Xin, Serene Tan, Travis Ong, Wina Nashita and Assistant Professor Laura Devendorf from University of Colorado Boulder.
