Dear students and colleagues
As the Acting Dean of the College of Design and Engineering, I am proud to see our students excel and make a mark in the global arena.
I recently had the honour of presenting the NUS flag to the AeroNUS team, who are under the guidance of our Mechanical Engineering Department. They were headed to Tuscon, Arizona, to represent NUS at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Design Build Fly (DBF) competition. Witnessing our students take on challenges and maximise opportunities to enrich their learning through competitions, student exchanges, and overseas immersions brings me great joy.
At CDE, we believe skills are honed, and knowledge is internalised through real experiences. We are grateful that the world has opened again to provide our students with these opportunities. THE NUS FSAE team is preparing for the upcoming FSAE competition taking place in Michigan in June. They, too, will be flying our NUS flag sky-high!
However, such experiences are not limited to global events. Our project showcases and poster presentations held every semester offer students the chance to share their exciting work and talent with industry stakeholders, alumni, and donors. They are platforms for our students to pitch their ideas, present their findings, and receive constructive feedback from those with different perspectives, giving them a glimpse into what they can expect in the real world.
The iDP Project Showcase held on 14 April drew much interest from our partners and donors, who were enthusiastic to see how our students are making an impact. These events are also ways that we, as a community, get to know each other better and create connections of value. It is an opportunity for us to celebrate our collective achievements and recognise the hard work of our students and faculty.
As we strive for excellence and innovation, I am proud to lead a community of students and colleagues dedicated to positively impacting society. I look forward to seeing more of our students soar and take on new challenges.
Sincerely,
Teo Kie Leong
Acting Dean

Shaping the Future of Human-Robot Collaboration
Across leading research institutions, robotics research is increasingly focused on extending human capability through meaningful human–robot collaboration. At Stanford University, this work is particularly focused on environments that are hazardous, remote, or otherwise inaccessible to people; by physically distancing humans from danger while still enabling their skills, intuition, and experience to guide robotic systems, they […]
Reflections and Experiments in Contemporary Korean Housing
This talk examines collective housing in contemporary Korea against an ethical vacuum produced in the process of modernisation in East Asia. This condition arises from the destabilisation of family-based ethics and the incomplete formation of civic ethics. Within this condition, the talk reframes the prevalence of apartment housing in Korea—often developed as large, semi-gated communities—not […]
